BossBabe: Kate Richeson shares her mission with Beautycounter + giveaway!
I love reading a good interview. I’ve been so excited to share the stories of other women that I connect with through my blog and daily life. I am so over the moon happy to introduce you to Kate Richeson, managing director with BeautyCounter. Kate and I met through a facebook post of mine and as it turns out we have a lot of mutual friends. Of course she was thrilled to learn that I am a BeautyCounter fan and she was so gracious to share her story with us!
Tell us a little bit about your business:
I am a Managing Director and Founding Member with Beautycounter. Our goal us to bring safe, beautiful, effective products to the market. Think Chanel meets Whole Foods. Our mission is to get safe products into the hands of everyone. Like most people, I was shocked to find out the cosmetics and personal care industry in the U.S is largely unregulated. In fact, the last time a law was passed governing the cosmetics industry was 1938! It’s all of a page and a half law with sizable loopholes. I was always careful about what I exposed my kids to, what I cleaned my countertops with, and what we eat as a family, but it never occurred me what I was putting on myself. Think about the number of products you put directly on your body once, sometimes twice a day, then multiply that by 365 days … then several decades. The exposure really adds up! But I’m also a total product junkie. Chic and innovative are at the top of my list. I feel compelled to help educate others so they can their own best advocate. It’s incredibly empowering to link arms with other like-minded women (and men) to lead meaningful change this $71 billion dollar a year U.S industry.
What was the best moment in your career so far?
That’s really hard to pinpoint. I find the most rewarding moments are watching my business partners and team members succeed. When I see someone achieve something that didn’t initially seem possible, that’s the good stuff. Personal achievements are something to celebrate for sure, but I am greatly fueled by collaborative effort and the success of others and a huge fan of women cheering on other women.
What is your best tip for managing work and personal life?
Prioritize and time-block. I try to look at my calendar at the beginning of every week and schedule everything as best as I can. From workouts, to client follow-up, to socials, to my son’s baseball practice, to date night. Having a flexible career is a huge gift, but setting boundaries is necessary to preserve your sanity. I’m certainly not perfect when it comes to finding the right balance, but it’s something I am constantly working on.
What is the hardest business lesson you ever learned?
That the team/business culture comes before individual needs. I feel a tremendous responsibility to my team, many of whom have become very dear friends. Like any relationship, sometimes it sometimes doesn’t work out. Extracting a negative influence is necessary, but it’s still tricky even when it’s for the best.
What are three things every boss babe should have for success?
Passion – It’s hard to get motivated about something you don’t care deeply about
Applied Focus – To move the needle, you have to take action on a consistent basis. Set small daily goals and hold yourself accountable.
Tenacity – You will hit road blocks. You will get really really frustrated. Things will not always go your way. Keep your eye on the prize, make any necessary adjustments, stick with it, and keep moving forward!
What are some words you live by?
“Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they’re yours.” I am huge a fan of mantras and quotes. They really motivate me, and this one from Illusions by Richard Bach reminds me to get out of my own way! It’s just a different way of saying “You can do anything you put your mind to.”
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
“Don’t get caught up in the crazy”. It applies to the rat race of both business and personal life. Focus on what’s important and try to block out the static.
What is something that you can do really well?
What is your guilty pleasure?
I’m not a gamer, but I love Two Dots. It’s like a new Tetris and is a great 5 minute reset for my brain.
Early riser or night owl?
A total night owl.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee, black. I am fueled by caffeine.
Go to cocktail?
Tito’s Vodka and soda with lime
@georgehtakei – I appreciate a good chuckle served up by a saucy seventy-eight year old.
What advice would you want to give to a room full of women business owners?
Define your WHY. When you can tell your story to others, it is so much more compelling than just selling a product or idea. Defining your personal motivation is what will pick you up when you have set backs.
